Welcome to the City of Coos Bay! With a population of 16,470 this is the largest city on the Oregon Coast. Coos Bay, which was previously named Marshfield (name changed in 1944), is a great place to live and work. The City operates on a Council/Manager form of government with a Mayor and six Councilors, all volunteer positions, elected by the citizens.
Surrounded by emerald forests, the mighty Pacific Ocean, and the Bay (Coos Bay), the City of Coos Bay celebrates a rich history as a shipbuilding and lumber shipping center and a regional hub for Oregon’s south coast. Coos Bay and its sister city, North Bend, form a commercial and retail center with professional, medical, educational, and media services. Arts and EducationArt
The Coos Art Museum features a variety of special showings annually, housing a permanent collection, a Steve Prefontaine memorabilia display, and a student art gallery. The museum also offers classes at its downtown Coos Bay location. A dozen or so private art galleries in the area feature paintings, photographs, pottery, jewelry and other unique art objects. The local libraries hold regular exhibits of local artists. Coos Bay is also home to the Coos History Museum and the Marshfield Sun Printing Museum. Education Fostering and educating the youth is a high priority. Coos Bay School District #9 serves approximately 3,600 students, K‐12, and there are also additional private school options. Marshfield High School students excel in many fields. A few examples include involvement in international forensic competitions and national recognition for journalism publications. The Boys and Girls Club provides year‐round athletic, dance, and educational programs. Coos Art Museum and other programs provide opportunities for artistic expression. Southwestern Oregon Community College is the area’s higher learning center with a 125‐acre campus, and a university center that coordinates programs from Oregon universities. Undergraduate degrees are offered in numerous fields. Library The City of Coos Bay’s completely automated public library is part of the Coos County Library system with an online catalogue and reciprocal usage service throughout the nation. Public safety is a priority, and the City of Coos Bay is proud of its Police and Fire Departments; the new fire hall is a source of community pride. |
HealthcareHospital
Bay Area Hospital has more than 1,000 employees, 130 physicians on its medical staff, 100 volunteers, and is governed by a five-member Board of Directors who are elected officials. As the Medical Center for Oregon’s South Coast, Bay Area Hospital offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The hospital’s inpatient and outpatient services include medical, surgical, behavioral health, pediatric, critical care, home health, outpatient psychiatric, oncology, obstetrical, and other specialties. Modern technology has made diagnosis and treatment easier. New and expanded medical services include laser treatments, MRI, CT, PET, mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, laparoscopy, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, varicose vein treatment, and the latest technology in radiation therapy called IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy). Coos Bay also offers a number of medical clinics. North Bend Medical Center and Bay Clinic are two of the largest clinics on the South Coast and Coos Bay.

Events and Festivals
Coos Bay is home to a number of unique events in the area. Some are staples in the community, such as the Pre run which honors Coos Bay born Olympian Steve Prefontaine and follows his daily run along Ocean Boulevard. The Prefontaine Memorial Run is an annual event held the third weekend of every September, and is the centerpiece of the Bay Area Fun Festival.
Other unique events include the Festival of Sails, featuring tall ships which attracts thousands of tourists to the area to witness the historical ships on the bay. In 2017 the festival will feature around 12 ships and will draw people from all over the state to the Coos Bay area.
