Why bring your business to the southern Oregon Coast?
Your business could be a part of paradise on the southern Oregon Coast. While the weather may be wet parts of the year our business environment gets hotter every year. What is generating this heat? There are a number of resources in Coos Bay available to south coast businesses large and small including:
Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides practical information and services that strengthen and support an entrepreneurial culture. Their specialty assistance to startups and well-established businesses includes access to capital, marketing, planning and management of a business. They offer over a hundred training courses focused on business needs.
SBDC is heading the REEF (Rural Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Framework) project in the Newmark Building (2110 Newmark Avenue, Coos Bay). This project helps centralize business resources with the intent of creating a centralized ‘one-stop’ resource for business that will include a childcare care center incubator, Commercial Kitchen space, business incubator, coworking spaces, and much more.
SBDC is part of the Oregon SBDC Network which provides 19 centers in Oregon and is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Oregon Business Development Department, and other private and public partners, with Southwestern Oregon Community College serving as the Network’s lead host institution. For more information on the SBDC see https://bizcenter.org or https://www.socc.edu/sbdc or contact John Bacon, Executive Director, 541-888-7001.
South Coast Development Council (SCDC), also located in the Newmark Building, is a major cooperator in the REEF project and occasionally sponsors some business training. In September, for instance, SCDC offered a course on Non-Profit Board Recruitment and Engagement. On October 5, SCDC is offering a short course on Business Succession Planning in room 207. This course will help businesses plant their exit strategies and timeline for retiring business owners. This is free through a grant from NWCDC please contact Sam at 541-888-7003 to get your time slot.
Services offered by the SCDC promote and support businesses that provide quality jobs. This might including locating grants and funding options, locating appropriate building sites and structures, marketing and coordination (e.g, negotiating agreements, purchase and leases, business and succession planning, training, filling vacancies, etc.), and more. SCDC also sponsors several discussion groups where businesses can discuss sensitive issues and get ideas on how to resolve them in a completely confidential environment. The SCDC is creating a network that supports local businesses and cultures a successful and vibrant business environment.
The South Coast Development Council is made up of local businesses, governments, and private individuals who help find resources, solve problems, and support this free service. Services provided by SCDC are also privately supported by several local businesses and individuals interested in improving community livability. Major investors include Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, City of Coos Bay, Coos County, Jordan Cove LNG, Bay Area Hospital, City of Brookings, and Southwest Oregon Community College. For more information on the SCDC see https://www.scdcinc.org/ or contact Executive Director Sam Baugh at 541-888-7003.
Additional help is available through the CCD Business Development Corporation (https://ccdbusiness.org/) which is a private nonprofit Oregon corporation and serves as the federally recognized Economic Development District for Coos, Curry, and Douglas counties. The CCD prepares communities for economic growth by encouraging economic diversification and capacity building and ensuring availability of adequate infrastructure.
The more you look, the more resources you will find to help make your dream of a successful business on the southern Oregon coast a reality.
Ever been on the Whiskey Run Mountain Biking Trail? The trail is exciting and is attracting mountain bikers young and old. This project attracts visitors from more than just the south coast area, but from across the nation.
Wild Rivers Coast Alliance is a South Coast Development Council (SCDC) member that exemplifies what the SCDC is all about. The members of SCDC are dedicated to helping create responsible growth along the South Coast. Much of what is accomplished is done by individual members working in conjunction with those who bring them good ideas on how to attract more visitors, how to grow and support the existing businesses on the South Coast and how we can bring new businesses and jobs to the area.
This is exactly what Wild Rivers Coast Alliance did! A great idea was brought to them and they worked in conjunction with and helped support those that made the trail happen. To take a quote from The World Newspaper "This project just proves how much we can do when we work together," said Board of Commissioners Chairman Melissa Cribbins. "This partnership combined the efforts of Coos County, Wild Rivers Coast Alliance, Jon-Paul Bowles, Chris Barnhart of Sentieros Consulting, Eddie Kessler of Ptarmigan Trails, Travel Oregon and its regional steering committees, and the efforts of the Wild River Coast Mountain Biking Club."
The result is that we are richer here on the South Coast. We have 10 miles of fantastic single-track mountain bike trails with 10 more miles soon to come.
Thank you Wild Rivers Coast Alliance for being a part of the growth and development of the South Coast and for the extraordinary example of what the SCDC is all about.
