I always love receiving these kinds of letters from companies that SCDC has helped. This letter came to me from Dick Leshley, although retired, most people know him from Yellow Cab.
Yellow Cab is an essential company in Coos County. It helps many of us to and from our daily lives.
This is what Dick had to say:
To set the stage I purchased Yellow Cab Taxi in 1986 and the business was located at 2756 Woodland Drive, Coos Bay, Or. We need to skip ahead now to November 2017. I had finalized the sale of my business effective December 31, 2017. The plan was for me to turn the operation to the buyer December 1, 2017, so that he could train his team and effectively take ownership on January 1, 2018. The business was still located at the business complex at 2700 Woodland Dr, Coos Bay, Or. During our occupation, we had significantly upgraded, at our cost, the leased property to meet our growing needs.
On or about November 1, 2017, we received a note from a new owner that our lease due to expire December 31, 2017, would not be renewed. We were not allowed any negotiation. My 30-day year-end vacation was to be postponed. Our issue was that we had to relocate a business that had 11 employees, provided services to 45 professional drivers and needed space to park and maintain 25 vehicles. The good news was that we had at least 60 days to move!
As luck would have it I attended an SCDC Board meeting that first week. I was not a board member or even a member; just an interested community business. At the end of each meeting members and guests are invited to share what is happening with their business. I shared our situation not expecting anything. I was surprised because this group mobilized then to find us a new location. From that date, I was in nearly daily contact with Shaun or Sam giving me needed information on possible sites. Other members stepped up with more information. The happy ending was that we were able to relocate to a larger building at a competitive lease within 45 days.
SCDC is a community asset that quietly (too quietly) works behind the scenes to help our businesses survive, grow and thrive.
Thank you SCDC;
